Catherine wondered into the little town, she was eight years old with blond hair and large brown eyes. She looked around, she was so hungry it hurt but she didn’t have any money. The situation didn’t leave her much choice. She noticed a grocery store and went inside. Along the counter were jars of candy, she loved looking at it. It was so colourful, it all looked so good. Unfortunately she had only tried candy once in her life, just a small piece her uncle given her when he had come to visit once. She sighed to herself, and continued down the isle all the while trying to stay out of the view of the shop keeper.
She spotted at barrel of apples and made her way over to it. She looked around, she didn’t see anyone. Bitting her lower lip nervously she grabbed one and shoved it in her pocket then grabbed a second and was about to stuff it in her other pocket when she felt a hand wrap tight around her wrist. She winced and looked up in shock. She saw the shop keeper. The man gave her an angry look “Do you intend to pay for those?” he said in a stern voice. Cat was too scared to say anything, she had never stolen anything before. When she didn’t reply the shop keeper pulled her over to the counter and continued “No?, well I guess that makes you a little thief! Where are your parents?!” he roared at her. Catherine was used to being yelled at but she didn’t know what to do, there were people in the store staring at her, she felt like crying but she held off for now. “I don’t got no parents so let me go your hurting my arm you jerk!” she yelled back at him with tears in her eyes. The man didn’t show much sympathy, if anything he just got more angry and squeezed her wrist tighter. "Ouch, stop it!" she begged and tried to pull away, she didn't have much success.

J.D. usually tried to avoid town with the staring eyes. People judged him here. They thought of him as a freak, someone who wasn't cowboy, yet not native to the lands either. To avoid so many eyes following him he went into a store. When the door opened he saw a circle around a man and a child, his ears caught some of the words, theif, no parents, and hurting me. He trudged over and broke apart the circle. His arm went forward and pulled the overweight man off of the little girl. Leave her alone. His hand went in his pocket and pulled out some coins. He shoved them into the man's hand, That should cover it. Dark eyes glanced towards the girl before he turned and started walking out the of store.

The little blond girl watched as a man came and pulled the fat old shop keeper off of her. She rubbed her wrist and watched as the man gave the shop keeper some coins. The shop keeper looked stunned, embarrassed he shrunk back over to the back room after looking at Cat and telling her to get out. Catherine blinked and watched as J.D. left the store. She hurried after him “Thanks!” she said as she looked up at him. Suddenly she realised how hungry she was, she took the apple out of her pocket and had a bite. “Want an apple?” she asked offering him the second apple.

He stopped and looked at the girl following him. He gave an inward groan and rolled his eyes but forced a smile on his face, Don't expect it in the future. He paused and eyed the bruised apple in her hand, No, you need it more than I do. He turned and started to walk away but then stopped, I know a place where the apples are good, better than those things. He turned and motioned for her to come over to him with his arm.

Cat shrugged and stuck the other apple back in her pocket for later. To be honest she never expected anyone to help her, she was used to taking care of herself by now. She looked excited at the mention of more apples, better ones. The ones she had weren't that good and pretty small "Really?, where?" she followed him.

He smiled at the kid and started to walk away from town. He looked back to see her following him. He smiled and shook his head. After a half a mile's walk he stopped in front of a bunch of apple trees. He turned and opened his arms to her, showing them.

Her big brown eyes lit up when she saw all the apple trees "Wow!" she smiled up at him. She looked at the half eaten apple in her hand. It didn't look nearly as nice as the ones on the trees. "Don't need this anymore" she said and tossed it over her shoulder. She went over to one of the trees and grabbed one of the apples that was low enough for her to reach. She turned to JD again "So who are you anyways?" she asked curiously.

He watched her with a smile and picked an apple for himself, he listened to her talk and smiled. I'm J.D. I'm new to this part of town, and apparently quite scary. He gave a half laugh and shook his head, And you are? He asked after taking a bite of the apple.

She took a bite of her apple and listened to him talk. "Your not scary" she said wrinkling her nose up a bit and looking at him. "Im Catherine, but don't call me that, call me Cat ok" she warned. She always thought Catherine was a stupid name so she prefered Cat. "I used to live outside town but not anymore" she said casually before taking another bite of her apple.

Catherine looked a little embarrassed "Oh...I never thought about the animal... Oh well, still better than Catherine I guess" she said then shrugged. The little girl gave him yet another funny look "What do you mean, grew up differantly?" she asked. She was always full of questions.

He laughed and rubbed her hair. When her second question was asked he paused and shook his head, I lived with some other people for a while. he said, trying to put it in a way a child would understand.

Catherine looked up at J.D., she still didn't get it. He wasn't scary to her, he looked normal and he seemed nice. She was still to yong to understand but she decided to take his word for it "Ok"she said with a shrug. "I still don't think your scary though" she said with a nod. She finnished off her applea and grabbed another one.

He laughed and nodded, Well, thats good. I don't want you to think I'm scary. He walked over to her and lifted her up so she could reach a better apple, You have to admit though, I was pretty scary in the store. He grinned and put her back down on the ground.

She grabbed one of the bigger apples on the tree and then said thanks. She giggled "Yep, well you scared the store owner man really good. And the people in the store. It was great!" she said with a wide grin as she looked up at him with big brown eyes.
